How do I know if I qualify for ​a CTE credential?
In general, you need:
  • Three (3) years of industry experience or 3000 hours within the past 10 years with one year in the past 5 years
  • A copy of your high school diploma or official college transcript
  • A Certificate of Clearance with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC)

What are the CTE Industry Sectors?
There are 15 industry sectors:
  • Agriculture and Natural Resources
  • Arts, Media, and Entertainment
  • Building and Construction Trades
  • Business and Finance
  • Education, Child Development, and Family Services
  • Energy, Environment, and Utilities
  • Engineering and Architecture
  • Fashion and Interior Design
  • Health Science and Medical Technology
  • Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation
  • Information and Communications Technologies
  • Manufacturing and Product Development
  • Marketing, Sales, and Service
  • Public Services
  • Transportation
Can I apply for more than one industry sector?
If you qualify for more than one industry sector you can apply for more than one at the same time. On the 41-4 form, put one industry sector in Section 4 and the other(s) in the Comments/Additional Subject Request in Section 9 under your signature.
Do I need to send my high school diploma and college transcripts?
You need to submit a copy of your high school diploma OR an official college transcript.

I went to school in another country. Do I need to have my transcripts evaluated?
Foreign transcripts must be evaluated. See the CTC website for approved organizations available to complete the evaluation: 

How do I get a Certificate of Clearance? 
After completing the Live Scan fingerprinting, go to www.ctc.ca.gov, create an Educator Account, and apply for the Certificate of Clearance.
 
How long is the preliminary CTE Credential valid?
The preliminary CTE credential is valid for 3 years. During that time you need to enroll in our CTE Teacher Preparation Program and complete the coursework to clear the CTE credential. Once the credential is clear, it is valid for 5 years. 
 
When do I have to submit my Early Orientation? 
Early Orientation is required to be completed within the first 30 days of holding a preliminary CTE credential.
 
How do I clear my Credential?
You need to meet the requirements of the credential through our sequence of coursework. The coursework assigned is specific for either First-Time Credential Holders or Existing Credential Holders.
 
First-Time Credential Holders
Coursework - ​CTE 101, CTE 102, CTE 103, CTE 104
  • ​​​​US Constitution requirement
  • CPR for adult, child, and infant
  • ​Teach CTE classes under the preliminary CTE credential for 4 semesters

Existing Credential Holders
Coursework - CTE 100 - Foundations
 
  • ​US Constitution requirement
  • Health Education for Educators class​
  • CPR for adult, child, and infant
  • Teach CTE
    • ​If you have taught one year on a clear single subject or multiple subject credential, you must teach CTE classes under the preliminary CTE credential for 2 semesters.
    • If you hold a preliminary single subject or multiple subject credential or have been placed in CTE Foundations, you must teach CTE classes under the preliminary CTE credential for 4 semesters.
